When traveling to a new city, it is likely to want to experience the culture firsthand. It is a chance to go out and get a taste of life as the locals live it. Of course, when the destination is Miami, Florida, dancing is the only way to tap into its society.
Fortunately, the infamous Gloria Estefan and her husband Emilio Estefan understood the need to represent Miami's Cuban culture through their restaurant, Bongos Cuban Cafe.
Bongos Cuban Cafe combines the "nostalgia of Havana during 1950s glory days" with "authentic Cuban cuisine." The Estefan's labor of love features dancing, food and fun as part of its cultural experience. By day it is a restaurant, and at night, Bongos Cuban Cafe turns into a disco everyone wants to get into. This place is so popular, many high profile events have taken place here, including awards after parties and music videos.
It all started 10 years ago in Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World. Bongos Cuban Cafe opened to much fanfare and inspired Gloria and Emilio to open other locations in Miami and South Beach. The 16,000 square foot restaurant and disco is identified from far away by the large pineapple that graces the roof.
On its website, Gloria is quoted as saying, "We have the opportunity to showcase our rich Cuban culture with the rest of the world. Our Bongos Cuban Café (in Disney World) has had great success, and since this one (in Miami) opened we couldn't be happier. Bongos Cuban Cafe has been a great success.” The locale overlooks the Biscayne Bay, the Miami port, and the Miami skyline. It raises two stories from the plaza level of the American Airlines Arena. With its "tropical deco architectural design" and beautiful setting, Bongos Cuban Cafe sure beats the heat.
Located at 601 Biscayne Blvd. Miami, Florida, Bongos Cuban Cafe is open only for private events on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday through Sunday, lunch and dinner is served between 11:30 a.m. and 11 p.m. The nightclub hours are on Friday and Saturday nights, from 12 a.m. to 3 a.m.. The menu at Bongos Cuban Cafe has a variety of dishes to offer, from appetizers to desserts. There is even a kids menu so the whole family can enjoy the atmosphere and food.
Gloria Estefan and Emilio Estefan managed to bring the culture and cuisine of Havana, Cuba to Florida via their restaurant/disco, Bongos Cuban Cafe. The heart and soul put into all three locations makes for an exciting experience. The view offered at the Miami location may have a bit of an edge, but the food and music at Bongos Cuban Cafe cannot be beat for an authentic Miami night on the town.
